There is a very strong likely-hood that it your are planning to attend University, it will be the first time you move away from home, usually to a much larger and unfamiliar city. Ipersonally experienced this by moving from a small town to Liverpool, which was a big shock initially (and Liverpool isn’t even THAT big). With larger cities, accommodations can be spread all over the place, you may get lucky and live near both the University and local amenities such as supermarkets and shops, therefore you very rarely have to deal with the hassle of transport and paying for it. Most people however do have to use some sort of public transport on a daily basis either for travelling to town or to the University. Below are some tips on how you can make this aspect of student life run a little but smoother without financially crippling you.

Buses
Probably the most common form of public transport for students, yet probably the most hated due to people’s misconceptions about them being busy, dirty and unpredictable services. But you must remember that it’s also one of the cheapest ways to get around. For students, most bus companies run a student travel rate which turns out cheaper than the price of a regular ticket. Bus passes are also available which are usually valid for a term, these can save you a great deal of money if you will be a frequent bus traveler.

Trains
Not really used to get around a town or city, but are widely used to visit other areas of the country such as home or to see friends who are at University in different areas of the country. Trains can be very expensive, so it is advised to book online early to receive more favorable rates. Student can apply for a young person’s railcard for only £20, in exchange you receive a third off the price of a regular ticket, this can pay for itself in only one journey.

Taxis
Much more expensive than buses and are not recommended for day-to-day convenience transportation due to the price involved, using taxis every day really could create a huge hole in your pocket. The only time I would recommend using a taxi would be on the way home after a night out or if you really don’t have any idea where your required destination is located. Make sure you use a taxi service which is officially registered and is legal to carry paying passengers.

In larger cities there are other cheap and reliable forms of public transport such as dedicated student buses and metro trams. Make sure that you include these transport costs into your budget. It’s important to think sensibly about your transport, you really don’t want to suffer financially just to even get to University every day. As usual comments and experiences are welcomed below.

Difficulty in choosing a topic for your book is one of the dilemmas faced by an aspiring writer. It is in a way similar to the condition of accomplished writers having a writer’s block. As an aspiring writer, you may be full of evangelical zeal to change the world or solve some of the most difficult problems facing the society or the community you live in. However, when it comes to selecting a topic for your book, there are so many choices that you could get lost for choices in deciding the topic for your book and thus be unable to zero in on one particular topic.

List making will help you get started with the creative process of writing a book. Take some time to reflect on issues you and your acquaintances resolved successfully and derived great joy and satisfaction from. Given the stressful and fast paced times we live in, people have very little time to dwell on the problems they have and are always eagerly looking forward to someone addressing their plight. Such people could be your potential readers. List all the things of interest to you and in which you have considerable expertise - it could be self-improvement, house repairs, resolving marital discord, photography, dealing with job loss etc.

List issues that you want to resolve in your life, community, county etc. If you have an unresolved issue, chances are that there are thousands of other people grappling with the same problem.

The issue you choose should be an open issue with various approaches to resolve. It is not important that you know all the answers before you write the book.

The Internet is a great place to find what people are reading or are looking for at any point in time. A Google, Yahoo, or Mamma search will be able to generate hundreds of topics, if you enter phrases such as “best selling fiction” and “non-fiction topics”, “how to manuals”, “challenges 2008″ etc.

Non-fiction books can be discovered on Amazon, Google, or leading newspaper’s bestsellers lists. This should help you in determining the current hot topics preferred by readers. It has been established that more people who buy on Amazon buy non-fiction books on subjects ranging from self-help to quickest ways to make a million dollars. It is now a known fact that E-books on non-fiction topics make profits faster than fiction. Fiction readers prefer to buy books of authors known to them or authors they have heard about before. Fiction readers prefer to lounge around and read. Fiction is also difficult to write and deliver. Fictional classics available on the Internet are free and downloadable. Non-fiction books are a safe option, unless you prefer to take risks.

Thankfully ideas do not have copyright protection. You could easily build on an idea you read about in an E-book to write your very own E-book. This effectively means you can write E-books on ideas already on the Amazon bestsellers list. Also non-fiction readers do not care so much about the author’s reputation and are open to buying books of unknown or lesser-known authors.

Copyright law protects presentation of ideas. This means you shall not copy the text straight from the original book. The title will also have to be reworded. The subject is not copyright protected and you can write without fear of committing any illegalities.

You can create eBooks and other content by repurposing any material that is in the public domain. A public domain work is defined as anything not protected by copyright, and which may be used by anyone. There are several reasons that a work may be in the public domain.

  • If the writing was done prior to 1923 it is automatically available for your use. There are written materials, books, and reports that you can reformat easily and sell on the internet. It is estimated that there are over 85 million books on a wide variety of topics that are currently in the public domain. Most of these books are written on evergreen topics, meaning they will never become outdated ideas.
  • If the term of copyright has expired. Many people are just not interested in renewing their copyrighted material, or have passed away, leaving their writing to the public domain.
  • The author has chosen not to renew the copyright. This could be for a number of reasons.
  • The work is from the United States government. Unless someone else has already taken out a new copyright, this work is also yours for the taking.

If any of these things have taken place, the books and other materials are available for you to use freely. However, you will want to find resources to help you sort out the information that is available. The problem has always been that there is so much available on the internet it is difficult to know where to look.

In the past I have recommended site such as Project Gutenberg and Authorama, but this can be a long and tedious process at best. This is a great way to have an eBook or other content ready to sell very quickly. If this is of interest to you in any way, you owe it to yourself to consider using public domain works as a source of articles, reports, and eBooks to sell online.

Imagine finding a book on your exact topic and being able to reformat it so that it looks more modern and attractive to today’s readers. You can do just that, as well as use this information to create reports and other materials to give away as lead generators and bonuses. You can also break up these books into hundreds of articles that you can widely distribute around the internet, as well as blog posts, bringing you thousands of interested visitors that may be interested in purchasing the books in eBook form. You will have a lifetime of content and be able to focus on attracting people to your sales letters where your eBooks will be available for sale.

And now I invite you to learn more by visiting http://www.PublicDomainContentNow.com to have immediate access to more than 85 million public domain books and other materials to help you write your eBook now.

I was absolutely shocked when I checked out a new client’s website. He is an author who wants to sell more books. But he doesn’t have an online shopping cart! He expects people to call his 800 number and give him their credit card number over the phone. He also asks people to send checks to his post office box. While both calls to action might seem normal, they are so 1980!

In today’s world, people expect to pay online. And you as an author should have an online shopping cart in place to take their money.

Here Are 7 Reasons to Use a Professional Online Shopping Cart & Stop Taking Orders by Phone

1. People live in dozens of different time zones. Do you want to answer the phone at 2 a.m. your time because someone in England is having her first cup of coffee and wants to order your book?

2. People shop on weekends. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be out in my kayak on a weekend than sitting by the phone waiting for a book order.

3. Telephone tag. Let’s say you just appeared on a talk radio show and people are calling to order your book. They will get a busy signal since you can talk to only one person at a time. You’ll find that you have to call back a dozen people. If this happens, you run the risk of playing telephone tag - and possibly never connecting with them.

4. Expensive phone charges. When you return phone calls, you risk paying long-distance rates including international phone calling rates. Your cost of taking the order just jumped through the roof.

5. Too much time, not enough money. When you take orders over the phone, you have to be nice. There’s nothing wrong with being nice, but you have to engage people in a conversation: How’s the weather? Where are you calling from? How long have you been interested in this topic? If you don’t ask questions like this, people will think you are rude and might not want to buy your book! This all takes time. Is your time worth money? Well if you take 10 minutes to call someone and accept the order, you could be out $20 if you charge $120 an hour for consulting services. Now, if you have to make a lot of book order sales calls, you can be out hundreds of dollars.

6. When you only take order over the phone, you have to sell the person, not just take the order. Many authors are not comfortable selling on the phone. Or they are bad at asking for the order. You could blow the sale.

7. Too many mistakes. It is all too easy to misspell the person’s name, mailing address or credit card number. I call this unintentional dyslexia. You think you typed in “54″ and you said “54″ to the client, but you really wrote “45.”

If you had an online shopping cart, like MyEasyOnlineStore.com which is used by many authors including myself, you’d solve all these problems!

5 Reasons to Get a Professional Online Shopping Cart Now

1. Online shopping carts take orders 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without you being present.

2. It can handle multiple orders simultaneously. So if you get flooded with orders, your buyers won’t get a busy signal on the phone. Instead, they’ll get a confirmation note from the shopping cart that the order has gone through.

3. You can spend your time make money and creating new products, or providing services to your clients. You won’t spend time verifying orders.

4. No mistakes. People will type in their information correctly. If the credit card info is wrong, or if information is missing, the shopping cart will alert the buyer immediately.

5. Online shopping carts protect you from fraud. If the card isn’t valid, the shopping cart won’t let the order go through. On the other hand, if you get a bad check in the mail and you deposit it, your bank will charge you a fee. If you already mailed the product, then you will have lost the price of your product as well as the postage - and your time.

Add an online shopping cart to your website today and you will sell more products and services while protecting your time and energy. And, it’s very easy to get started.

Many people think of publicity as something for movie stars and millionaires. There is also the negative connotation that publicity can be a bad thing to go after and that is should be avoided at all costs. If you are writing an ebook, nothing could be further from the truth.

While you are writing your ebook, begin to get your name and topic known, both online and off. You can brand yourself according to what you do, or just let people begin to hear your name over and over so they can begin to feel like they know you.

When you see an article in the paper or a story on television, most of the time it is a result of someone seeking publicity. By making an effort to let the media know who you are and what you do, you can create attention that will pay off later on.

Begin with writing down what you do and how you do it. Keep it simple so that everyone can understand and there is no confusion. This is called your unique selling proposition, or USP. Now, use this as the basis for everything you do, including your blog posts, articles and press releases. The internet makes it easier than ever to capture the attention of the audience you serve.

You will sell more ebooks and be offered a variety of opportunities if you spend some time to get publicity. Make sure to include an email address and telephone number so that people can contact you if they have more questions.

I encourage you to find out more about how publicity can help you as you write your ebook.

I invite you to join me for free weekly teleseminars that will teach you how to write, market, and sell your ebook to increase your visibility, credibility and profits by visiting http://www.EbookWritingandMarketingSecrets.com

There has been a lot of talk about what you should choose for your first model railway train layout. Should a beginner use sectional track or flex-track? How should they go about a layout design? I hope to answer these questions.

Personally, I think you need to go with a layout that you are comfortable with. There are quite a few good books out with layout designs. Atlas makes several that are aimed at beginners. Some books I think you should get:

HO Primer and (All aboard)

The Practical Guide to HO Model Railway Trains, both by Kalmbach Publishing.

Six HO Railroads YOU Can Build is another good book with helpful info for getting started. It is published by Atlas (Tool Co.).

The HO Model Railroad Handbook is also a good resource. It is written by Robert Schlieicher and published by Chilton Book Co.

But the magazine that got me started was Model Railroader by Kalmbach, I also tried out Railroad Modeler and wasn’t that impressed. Basic books by Kalmback such as the one listed and many more are available by Kalmback I do belive one is called my first layout, also check out there annual special magazines such as Track planning 2001, and their “Great Model Railroads 2001″ if you can find the 20000 issues or older ones go for it and just read up. I also talked to the Hobby store owners such as if your in the Milwaukee Wi area talk to Dreamers, Greenfield News and Hobby, Terminal hobbyshop (aka Walthers), and in Waukesha Jetcos Hiawatha. All these places will steer you in the right direction.

Flextrack

If you are uncomfortable with using flextrack, and don’t feel you have the ability to design a track plan, with the associated wiring, then one of the layouts in these books might be just the ticket for what you want to do. The Atlas books have proven plans that WILL work, and they are designed for sectional track. They also include wiring diagrams that are easy to follow.

If you feel you have the ability to go with more advanced methods, by all means, go for it! If you run across anything that you have a problem with, make sure you check the internet.

May 1st is the National Day of Prayer. This years theme from the White House is “Prayer! America’s Strength and Shield.” This theme is taken from Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my hearts trusts in him, and I am helped.” God has created us so that we naturally hunger and long for a relationship with Him. Prayer is the bridge between Heaven and Earth. It is the connection through which the spiritual realm is brought into our everyday lives. Prayer is the way our spirits breathe. Just as our lungs seek out oxygen, our spirits require the presence of God and are designed to seek Him out. Prayer is fully developed through a close relationship with God. Just as we talk to our friends and family about our problems, prayer is talking to God and getting answers that our friends and family perhaps can not answer. Why should we pray? Does prayer really work? Why isn’t God answering my prayer? Ephesians 6:18 says; “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” And Romans 12:12 says; “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Jesus also teaches us in Luke 18 “to always pray and not give up.”

Prayer is the method God uses to provide not only our daily needs from food to shelter but also comfort, strength and guidance. We should pray without ceasing, which is to continually talk with God throughout our daily lives, good or bad. He wants us to include Him in everything we do. Some of us may feel odd or strange talking to God at all times, but I guarantee that the more you include God the more your prayers will be answered. We also need to forgive each other, before God can answer our prayers. If our hearts are closed and unforgiving and we pray to be blessed, God will not hear us until our hearts have been cleansed. Some of us may need to pray to God in our “prayer closets”. This is a special place and time that we should have on a daily basis designated just for God. Prayer starts with the relationship. And God is seeking a personal relationship with all of us who seek Him. If you find that prayer does not work for you, then maybe you need to start with the relationship first.

The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World written by Alan Greenspan is the frank and entertaining memoirs of this notable figure in American economic history. It would be an ever better read if Greenspan’s were more able to be as forthright and penetrating about himself as he is about others.

Alan Greenspan was born in 1926 and he was raised in Washington Heights, NY. In 1944 a draft board in central New York rejected Greenspan, then a recent high school graduate, because he had a spot on his lung that looked like it might be tuberculosis. When the war ended Greenspan attended Columbia University where he studied Economics. Greenspan had a very detail oriented view of life and economics during his educational years. He never seemed happier than when pouring over economic indicators that allow him to predict everything from the 1958 steel recession to the 1990s boom. “My early training was to immerse myself in extensive detail in the workings of some small part of the world and to infer from that detail the way that segment of the world behaves. That is the process I have applied throughout my career,” he writes.

Like his father Mr. Greenspan made his way to Wall Street, where he ran a consulting business that forecast the economy. He was doing quite nicely there when Martin Anderson asked if Greenspan wanted to join Richard Nixon’s 1968 presidential campaign. Except for Jimmy Carter, Greenspan has worked with every president since 1969, and in the book he offers a fairly blunt critique of each.

Gerald Ford was by far Greenspan’s favorite President. “He always understood what he knew and what he didn’t know,” Greenspan writes. Despite their ideological differences, Bill Clinton ranked second, thanks to his “consistent, disciplined focus on long-term economic growth.” Nixon, Reagan and George H. W. Bush each receive a mixture of praise and criticism. Only the current President George W. Bush goes without receiving credit for a single significant accomplishment.

“The Age of Turbulence” is actually two books in one.

The first 250 or so pages are a standard autobiography that tells us who Greenspan is. This is the part of the bookthat will appeal to thebulk of readers who are not economists themselves. There are numerous wonderful stories in this section of the book. Greenspan reminisces about his early days as a professional-caliber jazz clarinetist in New York in the 1950s, playing his sets and then reading his economics books during the breaks while fellow musicians go backstage to party and get high. Of himself as a 26-year-old “math junkie” who got knocked back on his heels by his philosophical guru, Ayn Rand. Of himself as an economic advisor trying to educate, serve and guide Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II. (Nixon wasn’t just anti-Semitic, Greenspan tells us, but anti-everyone: “I don’t know anybody he was pro.”). Or, the story about inviting NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell (now Mrs. Greenspan) to his apartment to read his essay on monopolies.

The second book is Greenspan’s account of public policy. Greenspan’s oft-quoted criticism — that current Republican office holders “deserve to lose” elections because they sold their principles for power and “ended up with neither” — should come as no surprise. Yet recent stories have relentlessly reported selected phrases from the new book as “unusually harsh criticism [of] President Bush and the Republican Party” for abandoning “the central conservative principle of fiscal restraint.”

I recommend this book to those people who want a better insight into the mind of the most famous economic planner of our time or those who want to better understanding Greenspan’s unique and often critical political views.
